Silver Ounce 1999 African Elephant, Coin from Zambia - detailed information

Silver Ounce 1999 African Elephant, Coin from Zambia (demonetised 2013)
CoinSilver Ounce 1999 African Elephant

The Kwacha is the official currency of Zambia. Apart from the regular circulating coinage, the country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction.

These coins are in the standard bullion size of one troy ounce of silver - designated as 1 oz Ag, where Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver. They were issued during the "first kwacha" period of the currency and were demonetised in 2013, when the "second kwatcha" was introduced at a rate of 1 new kwacha to 1,000 old.

This coin is part of a range of silver coins made by the Bavarian Central Mint for Zambia, and features a family of African elephants. It is not, however, part of the African Wildlife series featuring elephants, of which there is another coin for 1999.

The shield is supported by two figures - a man on the left and a woman on the right; at their feet are represented Zambia's natural resources: minerals and mining, agriculture and wildlife.
