CoinSilver Ounce 1999 Lion Family

The Kwacha is the official currency of Zambia. Apart from the regular circulating coinage, the country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction.

These coins are in the standard bullion size of one troy ounce of silver - designated as 1 oz Ag, where Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver. They were issued during the "first kwacha" period of the currency and were demonetised in 2013, when the "second kwatcha" was introduced at a rate of 1 new kwacha to 1,000 old.

This coin is part of a range of silver coins made by the Bavarian Central Mint for Zambia, and features a family of lions.

Within a plain border, the obverse of the coin displays the Coat of Arms of Zambia, featuring a shield with wavy vertical lines - a representation of Victoria Falls with water cascading over rocks. The shield is surmounted by a pick and hoe, crossed, representing the country's economic backbone: agriculture and mining; above them, an African fish eagle representing freedom and the nation's hope for the future. The shield is supported by two figures - a man on the left and a woman on the right; at their feet are represented Zambia's natural resources: minerals and mining, agriculture and wildlife.

On a ribbon below, which curls around an ear of corn, the national motto ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION, which emphasises the need for unity in a country of over 72 ethnic groups.

Around above, the name of the country: ZAMBIA. The date of issue, 1999, is divided by the Coat of Arms.

Below the Coat of Arms, on two lines the face value 5000 KWACHA.
