The Kwacha is the official currency of Zambia. Apart from the regular circulating coinage, the country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction.

These coins are in the standard bullion size of one troy ounce of silver - designated as 1 oz Ag, where Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver. They were issued during the "first kwacha" period of the currency and were demonetised in 2013, when the "second kwatcha" was introduced at a rate of 1 new kwacha to 1,000 old.

This coin is considered to be the first issue in the African Wildlife bullion coin series by the Bavarian Central Mint, and features an Elephant. It has the same design as a 4,000 Kwacha coin issued the previous year.
