The Australian quarter ounce platinum piece (abbreviated as 1/4 oz and designated with Pt for "Platinum") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products. Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used. This quarter ounce platinum coin with a face value of $25 is a commemorative re-issue of the reverse design of the 1910 Australian Florin - the largest silver coin in the first (pre-decimal) currency of Australia. The florin was an ancient denomination, first issued in 1344 by England's King Edward III. For over 600 years, a florin was worth two shillings in England's old monetary system (240 pennies per pound sterling). As a Commonwealth nation, Australia started minting its own florins in 1910 and stopped in 1963 when the old currency system was simplified - it was "decimalised" to today's 100 cents to a dollar; as part of the changeover in 1966, the florin was re-denominated as 20 cents. | ||||||
