Silver Ounce 2020 Vergulde Draeck Shipwreck, Coin from Australia
CoinSilver Ounce 2020 Vergulde Draeck Shipwreck

The Australian one ounce silver piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.

Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.

The 2020 Vergulde Draeck triangular one-ounce silver coin is the second release in the Australian Shipwreck series, following the Batavia release in 2019. The coins were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated grade.

The exquisite design of the reverse conveys two scenes to communicate the journey of the Vergulde Draeck ("Gilt Dragon"). With the image of the ship viewed upright, the Gilt Dragon is shown setting sail in its full glory. Flipping the coin to view the text of "1656" and "Vergulde Draeck" upright depicts the ship in its final state capsized shortly after wrecking in 1656. The obverse design depicts scenes from the dramatic story of the Gilt Dragon before its ultimate demise.

On the morning of 28 April 1656, a VOC ship called the Vergulde Draeck, travelling towards Batavia (now Jakarta) with a load of trade goods, coins, cargo, passengers and crew, struck an uncharted reef off the coast of Western Australia. The reef gutted the ship and only 75 of the crew survived, along with a small quantity of provisions and a single boat.

The under steersman, Abraham Leeman, took the boat and six crew on an astonishing and gruelling journey to Batavia and reported the wreck. Several attempts were made to rescue the survivors, but they were never located. The wreck of the Vergulde Draeck was discovered in 1963 and was excavated in 1972. Some 19,000 coins were recovered, mainly Spanish reals and some Japanese silver coins. The mystery of what became of the survivors of the Vergulde Draeck has never been answered. This was one of the most enigmatic episodes of Australia’s maritime history.

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide but "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, where the Queen's portrait by Vladimir Gottwald was fifth).

The Queen also wears the Coronation Necklace; originally made for Queen Victoria in 1858, it was also worn at the coronations (as Queen's Consort) of Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother) in 1937.

Unlike on British coinage, the effigy includes the Queen's shoulders. On regular circulating coins it extends almost to the rim of the coin. Consequently, on them the legend does not run continuously around the rim. On commemorative coins the effigy is smaller and the value and denomination are below.

The artist's initials JC (for Jody Clark) are incuse in tiny letters in the left field of the effigy (on the Queen's right shoulder, near the rim).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA 2020 ONE DOLLAR.

The effigy and legend of the monarch are in a small circle above, with the face value superimposed on the image below, near the base of the triangle.

The background image, which takes most of the surface of the obverse, depicts the stylised representation of the sinking of the Vergulde Draeck, including survivors in a boat trying to pull a man out of the water, and an underwater scene of an open chest full of coins, with the VOC logo on the inside of the lid, and scattered coins (Spanish pieces of eight) and artefacts.

The rim is plain; there is a jagged border surrounding the design.

At centre, the Vergulde Draeck (Gilded Dragon) vessel in full sail, surrounded by decorative maritime inspired ornaments, including two merlions (mythical creatures with the body of a fish and a lion's head) supporting the ribbon below. On top, a knight's helmet.

The inscriptions are upside down; when the coin is inverted, these read: 1 oz .999 Ag (one ounce of 99.9% silver; Ag is abbreviated from the Latin Argentum), VERGULDE DRAECK in a ribbon, and 1656.

The designer's initials AB (for Aaron Baggio) are below right, behind the supporting merlion.

The face value and denomination are on the obverse.
