Silver Fifty Grams 2021 HMS Bounty, Coin from Cook Islands
CoinSilver Fifty Grams 2021 HMS Bounty

The Cook Islands, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar circulates in parallel with the local Cook Islands Dollar; at the same time, the government also authorises many legal tender coins in the Cook Islands Dollar currency for collector's purposes or for investment.

Many of these are in bullion sizes based on the troy ounce, but some are in metric formats, such as the silver fifty grams bar.

This "coin bar" is part of a large range of bullion coins and bars featuring HMS Bounty.

HMS Bounty, also known as His Majesty's Armed Vessel (HMAV) Bounty, was a small merchant vessel that the Royal Navy purchased in 1787 for a botanical mission. The ship was sent to the South Pacific Ocean under the command of William Bligh to acquire breadfruit plants and transport them to the West Indies. That mission was never completed owing to a 1789 mutiny led by acting lieutenant Fletcher Christian, an incident now popularly known as the mutiny on the Bounty. The descendants of the mutineers and their Tahitian captives now live on Pitcairn Island.

The design shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy are the monarch's legend, the face value, and the date: ELIZABETH II 2.50 DOLLARS COOK ISLANDS 2021.

Above the effigy, on three lines the inscription specifying the precious metal content: 50g COIN FINE SILVER .9999.

Below the effigy is depicted the sailing ship HMS Bounty (also known as HMAV Bounty), sailing to left, flying the British ensign.

Below that, the logo of the manufacturer - the head of Alexander the Great as depicted on Ancient coinage, and the name of the company, B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt.

The background is covered with a geometric pattern of thin lines.
