Silver Half Ounce 2017 HMS Bounty, Coin from Niue - detailed information

Silver Half Ounce 2017 HMS Bounty, Coin from Niue
CoinSilver Half Ounce 2017 HMS Bounty

Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of coins under the authority of Niue. Most of these are commemorative and collector issues dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - including half ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 /2 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Those issued at prices much higher than their bullion value are separately listed in the Non-Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT) silver half ounce section of the site.

Unlike them, this coin is targeted at bullion investors and was initially released at a price close to the value of its precious metal content.

This coin is part of a large range of bullion coins and bars featuring HMS Bounty.

HMS Bounty, also known as His Majesty's Armed Vessel (HMAV) Bounty, was a small merchant vessel that the Royal Navy purchased in 1787 for a botanical mission. The ship was sent to the South Pacific Ocean under the command of William Bligh to acquire breadfruit plants and transport them to the West Indies. That mission was never completed owing to a 1789 mutiny led by acting lieutenant Fletcher Christian, an incident now popularly known as the mutiny on the Bounty. The descendants of the mutineers and their Tahitian captives now live on Pitcairn Island.

Obverse
Niue / Silver Half Ounce 2017 HMS Bounty - obverse photo

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II NIUE ONE DOLLAR 2017.

The background is patterned with thin lines radiating from the centre.

Around left and around right, the precious metal content HALF TROY OUNCE .999+ FINE SILVER.

The rim is wide and is styled as the face of a compass, with the letters N on top for North, E on the right for East, S below for South, and W on the left for West.

Finish: bullion (Brilliant Uncirculated).
Packaging: in plastic flip.

The coins were initially distributed through American company Money Metals Exchange, which announced them as being produced by the New Zealand Mint. This seems to be in error - NZ Mint did not make such coins, and the mint tubes that the coins come in are not branded, while NZ Mint usually has its brand on theirs. At the same time, Sunshine Minting was issuing a range of coins for the Cook Islands featuring the HMS Bounty, and other bullion coins for Niue that have the exact same obverse as these Niue coins. In short, we are attributing the HMS Bounty coins struck for Niue to Sunshine Minting.
