Coin | Twenty Cents 2013 (mint sets only) |
---|
|
The New Zealand small twenty cent coin has been in circulation since 2006, when the earlier large 20 cent coins were demonetised together with the one florin coins they had replaced at decimalisation in 1967 (which had remained legal tender and in circulation).
There were no 20 cent coins issued for circulation in 2013. Some were struck (in copper-nickel) for the mint sets and proof sets of the year only. |

Obverse | |
The obverse shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: NEW ZEALAND ELIZABETH II 2013.

Reverse | |
The reverse design depicts a reproduction of a remarkable Māori carving representing the 18th century Māori warrior leader called Pukaki, who was a Rangatira (Chief) of the Ngati Whakaue iwi of Te Arawa in the Rotorua district. The original carving was made in 1836 and today it can be viewed in the entrance of the Rotorua Museum.
The figure is flanked by Māori motifs. Below, the denomination 20 [cents]. |
