Five Dollars 2013 Short-tailed Bat, Coin from New Zealand - detailed information

When decimal currency was introduced in New Zealand on 10 July 1967, there was no new circulating denomination with the size and specifications of the old one crown piece, in which only commemorative coins had been issued; the new (large) fifty cents were equivalent in value but not in size. New Zealand issued crown-sized commemoratives with the specifications of the old crown, based on the British pre-decimal Crown. Until the introduction of the smaller circulating dollar coin in 1990, these coins had a one dollar denomination; later issues were denominated as five dollars.

These coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation.

New Zealand has the tradition of issuing one "main" large commemorative per year, and this coin is the 2013 New Zealand Annual Coin, featuring the New Zealand Short-tailed Bat.

NZ Post (the issued of the coin) says about it:
The brilliant uncirculated coin in this collection highlights the special attributes of the short-tailed bat and is beautifully crafted in copper-nickel. The design of the coin includes the unique bat using its folded wings to walk along the forest floor. It is beautifully framed within a circle that represents the moon (highlighting the nocturnal nature of the bat). The upper part of the coin features the bat in flight alongside New Zealand native ferns, and both the common and scientific names of the species are also included in the design - making it an extra-special coin to treasure.
