Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as one ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.

This micro-mintage coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series featuring ships from the Star Wars movies and shows an Imperial Star Destroyer, the backbone of the Imperial Starfleet.

With a length of 1,600 meters, the Imperial Star Destroyer is one of the largest starships in the entire galaxy. To operate such a battleship 9,235 officers, 27,850 conscripts and at least 2,500 (but typically 9,700) stormtroopers were needed. Over the time, through conquest some of the ships fell into the hands of the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic.
