Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as a quarter ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1/4 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to Disney movie characters and features Cinderella, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the first Cinderella release by Disney.
The Mint says about it: "This officially licensed, pure gold Disney collectible coin celebrates the 70th anniversary of Disney’s Cinderella which premiered on 15 February 1950. The ¼oz engraved coin shows Cinderella and Prince Charming as they dance through the castle during the ball to the tune of “So This is Love”.
The coin is packaged in a high-quality wooden inner case with a themed outer box featuring the 70th anniversary logo and Cinderella’s iconic glass slipper. A separate Certificate of Authenticity confirms the coin as one of only 100 to be produced." |
