Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as a quarter ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1/4 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum).

This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to characters and themes from the Lord of the Rings books and films, and features The Shire.

With a limited production of only 300, this fully engraved 1/4oz gold coin features a hobbit-hole in the beautiful Shire, from The Lord of the Rings. An antique finish completes this delightful design.

Created in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, the coin is made from .9999 pure gold and is legal tender. The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II can be found on the obverse. This precious collectible is placed inside a high-quality coin case where it is nestled in velvet and can be perfectly angled for display. A themed box and a Certificate of Authenticity complete the package. The coin’s unique number in the mintage is placed on the Certificate.
