Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as a quarter ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1/4 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to Disney movie characters and features Beauty and the Beast, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of its release by Disney.
The Mint says about it: "This officially licensed, pure gold Disney collectible coin celebrates the 30th anniversary of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast which premiered on 13 November 1991.
This ¼oz engraved coin shows Belle in front of the Beast, smiling as he gently holds her hands. A garland of roses completes the design.
The coin is packaged in a high-quality wooden coin case with a themed outer box featuring the 30th anniversary logo. A separate Certificate of Authenticity confirms the coin as one of only 250 to be produced." |
