Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, based on the troy ounce - such as the half ounce of silver format (abbreviated as 1/2 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
This coin is part of the four coin Lords of Rosenthal noble family set by the Czech Mint and is dedicated to Lev of Rosenthal (in Czech: Lev z Rožmitálu).
The Mint says about it:
Lev of Rosenthal (1425 - 1482) was a characteristic late medieval knight - the reverse side of the coin features him wearing a helmet with a raised visor. He actively participated in tournaments, when he sometimes fought without armour. Moreover, he was wealthy and socially and diplomatically skilled. Therefore he became the leader of the expedition of King George of Poděbrady - his sister's husband. In Western Europe he was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece which adorns his neck on the coin. |

In the upper half of the obverse, the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits. Below, the designer's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around above, the Queen's legend ELIZABETH II NIUE ISLAND. Below the portrait, the face value and date of issue: 1 DOLLAR 2017.
In the lower part of the obverse, an arch decorated in Gothic style. To the right of that, the mint mark of the Czech Mint - a crowned monogram of the letters ČM (Česká mincovna). |
