Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these have a Zodiac-inspired theme.
This rectangular silver ounce coin featuring the sign Taurus is part of a twelve-coin series dedicated to the Signs of the Zodiac and illustrated, in full colour, with drawings by famed Japanese artist Yutaka Kagaya.
Yutaka is one of the first "digital" artists; starting since 1995, he has been creating his wonderful paintings with the help of computer technology and the light pen. The reverse of the spectacular coin represents the work of the artist on which metamorphosed into the white bull Zeus, the master of all gods, passes through the waters of magnificent ocean with his beloved and admired Europa, a princess of Phoenicia, on his back.
The Taurean temper is hardly ever displayed impulsively, but when the bull gets furious, he can destroy everything in his way. You will always be able to distinguish the Taurus from the crowd by the extremely silent behaviour. Until you get to know each other closer, he will give the impression of a very silent man. His movements, manner of speaking are measured; he is a man of few words. Taurus women like to make a good impression on people and are very hospitable. She is always a good friend to her husband, reliable and faithful. |
