Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.

This specially shaped coin is part of a large range featuring Disney characters, and was issued to mark the 65th anniversary of Sleeping Beauty.

Released in 1959, Sleeping Beauty is based on the story "La Belle au Bois dormant" (The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods) by Charles Perrault. The film tells the story of Princess Aurora, to whose christening all fairies are invited with the exception of the dark fairy "Maleficent". Maleficent appears nevertheless and curses the princess - on her 16th birthday she should prick her finger with a spindle and die of it. However, another fairy is able to change the death curse so that Aurora falls into a deep sleep after pricking herself with the spindle. From this deep sleep, only "true love's kiss" can awaken her.
