Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.
The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating coins under its jurisdiction, such as this 1 oz (one ounce) silver coin.
This rectangular coin was issued as part of a four-coin set, developed and marketed by Australian company Treasures of Oz.
The company says about the set: Once the lowest card in the deck, the ace progressively became known as the highest card during the Renaissance. The “ace” comes from the name of a tiny Roman coin and only later became a playing card. Now when we think of “aces,” we think of experts in their fields, such as flying aces, heroes, and other top-notch industry leaders.
Designed by Teodora Chinde, these four silver coins are representative of her eye for fantasy and detail. Each piece has a smooth field of silver embellished with an intricate relief of an ace. There is one coin from each of the four suits of cards.
Partially colourised in red or black on the obverse side, the coins are stunning pieces of art. The obverse sides are embellished with a cameo of Tokelau monarch Queen Elizabeth II, and they have a second gorgeous design by Chinde, also in relief. |
