Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The five ounces (5 oz) gold coins are denominated as either ten pounds (£10) or five hundred pounds (£500).
The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same reverse designs.
This commemorative five ounce gold coin celebrates the christening of Princess Charlotte, the second child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Princess Charlotte of Cambridge was born on 2nd May 2015. Her full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Charlotte is the feminine form of Charles, named after her grandfather, Prince Charles. Her middle names come from her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II and her late grandmother, Princess Diana. Princess Charlotte is fourth in line to the throne of the United Kingdom.
Princess Charlotte was christened on 5th July, 2015. The christening took place at St Mary Magdalene Church at the Queen's Sandringham estate in Norfolk. The service was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. Charlotte's grandmother, Princess Diana, was baptised in the same church on 30th August, 1961. It is also where the Royal family attend their Christmas Day worship each year.
The artist John Bergdahl also designed Prince George's Royal Christening Crown in 2013, and he kept this coin in line with the traditional appearance of the other coin. |
