Gold Ounce Bar - Britannia, Series 2, Coin from United Kingdom - detailed information

The obverse shows a standing figure of Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain. She is wearing a crested helmet with its visor up to reveal her face, and scaled armour. In her left hand Britannia holds a trident, while her right hand supports a shield carrying the Union Jack and inscribed BRITANNIA along the horizontal stripe.

In microtext along the border of the shield, repeated three times, the inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN. It is in Latin and means "a decoration and a guard" - it was used as a protection measure on old coinage, where the text was inscribed on the edge of the coins to make it visible when people have "clipped" them to remove some of the precious metal.

In a circle in the upper left corner, there is a latent image: when the bar is tilted or rotated, this image changes from a padlock to Britannia’s iconic trident

The background is textured with a pattern of small waves made of microdots, called "surface animation" by the mint.

The reverse shows on top the logo of the Royal Mint, which incorporates a crowned Shield of the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom. On three lines to the right, The Royal Mint ®.

On three lines below, the precious metal content: 1 oz 999.9 FINE GOLD (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold).

Below that, a unique serial number (NOT shown on the generic product image supplied by the Royal Mint), above a line of crashing waves.

The background is textured with a pattern of small waves.
