|Coin||One Penny 2020 Silver|
One penny coins of this type are issued by the Royal Mint as "non-circulating legal tender" (NCLT) - i.e. for collectors, and are not intended for circulation.
This coin was issued as a suitable gift to parents to celebrate the birth of a new child.
The Royal Mint says:
"Our Hello Little One Silver Penny Baby Card in Blue is the perfect keepsake gift. Crossing the baby’s palm with silver is a customary way to wish a new baby the best possible start in life. Honour that tradition with this 2020 dated silver penny from The Royal Mint and the delightful hand painted Farthing Bear illustration."
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait").
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the effigy is the monarch's legend: ELIZABETH II · DEI · GRA · REGINA · FID · DEF ·. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.
Within a beaded circle, a crowned portcullis with chains (an adaptation of the Badge of Henry VII and now the Badge of the Palace of Westminster); around above, the denomination ONE PENNY; below, the date: 2020.
This is the same design as the first decimal British 1p coins.
