Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The five ounce (5 oz) silver coins are denominated as ten pounds (£10).
The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same reverse designs.
This commemorative coin celebrates the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
The five ounce coins with face value of £10, both gold and silver, are designed by artist Jonathan Olliffe who chose a more contemporary approach to the coronation and age-old ceremony. Inspired by the magnificent central aisle of Westminster Abbey, the Orb, Sceptre, and Coronation robe feature prominently, which are amongst the most symbolic items of Royal regalia, and are arranged in the foreground. To emphasize the perspective view of the Westminster Abbey interior, a sense of depth was created within the Abbey setting. This was achieved by placing the ceremonial regalia in the foreground, enhancing the scale and detail of these beautiful objects and allowing the viewer to be led beyond and into the heart of the Abbey. |
