Information about effigy: Queen Victoria - Portrait by Joseph Edgar Boehm (Jubilee Head)

This portrait of Queen Victoria was struck as part of a new coinage in gold and silver to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria (50 years on the throne), 1837-1887 - hence it is known as the "Jubilee Head". It was created by Joseph Edgar Boehm, who adapted the effigy from his own Jubilee medal. This obverse proved unpopular and was only used until 1893.

The effigy shows the bust of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing the small imperial crown, a long veil falling behind her head, a pearl necklace and earrings, the Ribbon and Star of the Garter and the badge of the Imperial Order of India.

On coins of larger size, the artist's initials J.E.B. are in relief on the shoulder truncation. On smaller coins, there is no artist signature.

There are two versions of the portrait, known as "Small Head" (smaller head, more of the Queen's body shown) and "Large Head" (larger head, at the expense of some part of the Queen's shoulders being truncated).
