Coin: Sixpence 1887 New Wreath Design
Description

In 1887 a new type of sixpence coin was issued, partly to mark the 50th year of Queen Victoria's reign. It had the "Jubilee" effigy and a Shield reverse. Except for the weight and the obverse legend these were similar to gold half sovereigns (both coins displayed no denomination, unlike the earlier sixpence coins). The design was virtually identical to the new shilling coins issued in the same year, but the shillings were larger in diameter and had double the weight.

Some people were quick to take advantage of the resemblance and started gilding the sixpences in order to pass them as half sovereigns. The coins were withdrawn as a result, so the type is now known as the "Withdrawn Sixpence". This new issue later in the same year reverted to the old wreath reverse, slightly modified (most notably, featuring a new crown).

This sixpence with the "Jubilee head" of the queen was issued 1887-93 in large numbers and is common, although choice specimens are seldom seen. The 1887 was extensively saved and is the most available date.
