The Perth Mint’s annual Australia Sovereign (also called the Australian Sovereign) is a prestigious 22-carat gold coin featuring a design inspired by historic sovereigns made at the Sydney Mint between 1855 and 1866. As the first overseas branch of Britain’s Royal Mint, the Sydney Mint was opened in 1855 to make sovereign coins from Australian gold. For the first 11 years they were distinguished from London versions by a specially prepared "colonial" design. A testament to the skill of Australia’s early minters, these highly successful issues continue to attract significant interest among modern collectors.

The regular coin has the same specifications as the British gold sovereign, which is a continuation of the Imperial (pre-decimal) sovereign - produced, among others, by the Perth Mint between 1899 and 1931 when it was a branch of the Royal Mint.

Since 2018, the Perth Mint also issues a Double Sovereign, which has the same specifications as the British Double Sovereign; its gold content is slightly lower than a half ounce of gold (0.4712 AGW), with 22 carat purity.

Unlike the two earlier "double sovereign" issues, this coin is called the Australian Sovereign 2020 Gold Proof High Relief Piedfort Coin and is considered by the mint a "piedfort" of the regular sovereign of the same year - that is, it has the same design and diameter but is double the thickness. However, it is denominated as 50 dollars and not 25 as the "single" sovereign.

The Mint says about it:
This modern commemorative take on the first Australian-made sovereign includes a reminder that it is 165 years since production of the historic gold coins began in Sydney. British sovereigns, one of the most influential gold coins in history, were made in Australia from Australian gold between 1855 and 1931. Providing the design inspiration for this exquisitely-crafted modern Perth Mint tribute, the very first Australian sovereign was struck in Sydney with a unique colonial design.

The coin is struck on an extra thick blank to accommodate the significantly raised relief of its key devices - including the crown, laurel, and words AUSTRALIA and SOVEREIGN - all features of the original 1855 issue.

Obverse
Australia / Australia Double Sovereign 2020 - obverse photo

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide but "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, where the Queen's portrait by Vladimir Gottwald was fifth).

The Queen also wears the Coronation Necklace; originally made for Queen Victoria in 1858, it was also worn at the coronations (as Queen's Consort) of Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother) in 1937.

Unlike on British coinage, the effigy is "uncouped" (includes the Queen's shoulders). In small letters on the left, the artist's initials JC (for Jody Clark).

Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the face value: ELIZABETH II 2020 AUSTRALIA · 50 DOLLARS ·.

The reverse of the coin uses historic elements of Leonard Charles Wyon’s original "Type I reverse" of the Australian Sovereign.

At centre, surrounded by a laurel wreath, the legend AUSTRALIA is crowned with St Edwards's Crown; named after Saint Edward the Confessor, it has been traditionally used to crown English and British monarchs at their coronations since the 13th century (with a two-century gap between 1689 and 1911).

Around above, the inscription PERTH MINT; around below, SOVEREIGN. There is no mint mark.

The border around the rim is beaded.

There is a privy mark below the crown - the numeral 165 within a circle - marking the 165th anniversary of the first Sydney Mint sovereign.
