|Coin||Gold Five Ounces 2021 Mythical Creatures - Unicorn|
The Australian five ounces gold piece (abbreviated as 5 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
The Perth Mint says about the Mythical Creatures Unicorn 2021 5oz Gold Coin:
"This fabulous release portrays a unicorn - a mythical creature that has fascinated people from many different cultures around the world since time immemorial. The unicorn is an enchanted creature that has existed in legend since antiquity. As tales and speculation grew about the elusive creature, it was believed that the unicorn’s ability to pass between worlds meant it was impossible to catch. Its most notable feature became a topic of special interest - those drinking from its horn, it was said, would be immune to disease and poison. Enjoying renewed levels of interest in modern pop culture, the unicorn is a potent symbol of magic and miracles."
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 5oz 9999 Au 2021 500 DOLLARS.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "5oz 9999 Au" means "five ounces of 99.99% gold" - Au is abbreviated from the Latin word for gold, Aurum.
Represented in classical form as a white horse with a single, spiralling horn on its forehead, the unicorn on the coin’s reverse is shown rearing on a mystical moonlit night.
Around left, the name of the series: MYTHICAL CREATURES. Below, the inscription UNICORN.
The design incorporates the Perth Mint’s P mint mark, below the unicorn's left foot. The designer's initials NM (for Natasha Muhl) are below the unicorn's hoof.
