|Coin||Gold Five Ounces 2020 Australian Kookaburra|
The Australian five ounces gold piece (abbreviated as 5 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This 5oz gold proof coin is part of the 30th Anniversary of the Australian Kookaburra coin range by the Perth Mint.
The Mint says about it:
An exceptional celebration of the Australian Kookaburra’s 30th anniversary, this sumptuous release is struck from 5oz of 99.99% pure gold in flawless proof quality.
The Australian Kookaburra is a much-loved silver and gold coin series portraying annual designs of our most famous bush bird. A rare and significant release honouring its milestone year, this extremely limited gold version portrays our 30th anniversary reverse with its special obverse featuring a representation of Stuart Devlin’s original 1990 Kookaburra artistry. The coin’s reverse portrays a kookaburra on a corrugated roof top with stylised rays of sunlight in the background.
At the centre of the obverse is a depiction of the first coins of the Australian Kookaburra series, showing the bird perched on the branch of an Australian eucalyptus tree.
In a small circle above that is the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version. On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Between the two circles, on the left and right, the anniversary dates of the coin series, 1990 and 2020.
Around the rim, interrupted by the Queen's portrait, the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA · 500 DOLLARS ·.
The reverse of the coin depicts a laughing Australian kookaburra perched on a corrugated iron roof, under the stylised rays of the rising sun just showing above the roof top.
The designer's initials JM (for Jennifer McKenna) are to the right of the bird. Below left, the Perth Mint's traditional P mint mark.
Around above, the name of the coin series: AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA.
Around below, the inscription 30TH ANNIVERSARY; around below right, the precious metal content: 5oz 9999 GOLD (five troy ounces of 99.99% gold).
