The Australian one kilo gold piece (abbreviated as 1 kg and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products. Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used. This coin is part of the first release in the Australian Road Sign series, and features a Kangaroo Road Sign. It is one of the last designs by Wojciech Pietranik before he retired from the Royal Australian Mint, and depicts a road sign well known to Australian drivers. These yellow diamond-shaped warning signs alert drivers to wildlife crossing the country's roads and show a variety of animals, the best known of which is the kangaroo. It seems that no coins of this kind were actually struck. They were announced for sale as "made to order" (i.e. minted on demand only), and no mintage was reported in the Roayl Australian Mint's annual report for this or the next financial year. | ||||||
