Coin | Gold Kilo 2019 Year of the Pig |

|
Australia has two mints, the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint, which are both very active in the bullion coinage space; coins issued by them are legal tender.
Additionally, there are private issuers of bullion which is not legal tender and is targeted at investors and not at coin collectors - such as this one.
This coin is part of the Lunar Series II (second iteration of the Perth Mint's Lunar Series) and marks the Chinese 2019 Year of the Pig (4 February 2019 - 24 January 2020).
The Mint says about it: The final animal in the Chinese zodiac, the pig is traditionally associated with luck, prosperity and wealth. Those ruled by the Chinese lunar pig are said to be honest, loyal, sincere, calm and generous. Birth dates include 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 and 2019. |

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1KG 9999 GOLD 2019 3000 DOLLARS.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content, one kilogram of 99.99% gold. |
