The Australian ten ounces gold piece (abbreviated as 10 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products. Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used. The Jewelled Dragon 2019 10oz Gold Proof Coin by the Perth Mint is the second issue in a series of jewelled collector coins dedicated to Chinese culture and features a dragon - the symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it. The Mint says about the coin: The dragon is chasing a flaming pearl, a symbol of enlightenment and spiritual energy, in its eternal quest for wisdom, power and immortality. The propitious creature celebrates harmony by ascending into the sky to fly amongst the clouds. Honouring traditional Chinese depictions of the revered creature, 81 of the dragon’s 117 scales harness "yang" and 36 "yin" with the three individual numbers adding up to the auspicious number nine. With the same pronunciation in Mandarin as the word for "everlasting", the number nine additionally has an ancient association with dragons and nobility." | ||||||
