Coin | Platinum Ounce 2023 Australian Koala |
---|
|
The Australian one ounce platinum piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Pt for "Platinum") is a bullion coin format.
The Platinum Koala series was introduced by the Perth Mint in 1988 following the large success of Australia’s gold coins in the previous year, and the approval on 18 June 1987 by the Australian government of the minting of platinum and silver coins. It is the world's first platinum bullion coin (the American Platinum Eagle series started nine years later, in 1997). Regular production of the series was discontinued after 2000 due to low demand; after that time, there are only some commemorative issues.
The overall weight of the coins is slightly over an ounce, so as (accounting for the purity of the alloy) to have exactly 1.000 ounce of platinum content.
This coin marks the 35th anniversary of the series, and uses the same reverse design as the first issue of the bullion koala in 1988. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II 1952 - 2022 · AUSTRALIA · 100 DOLLARS ·.
The legend is interrupted by the "memorial" inclusion of the dates of the Queen's reign, 1952 - 2022.
The background is frosted. |

Reverse | |
On a frosted background, the reverse design of the coin depicts a koala facing the viewer. At the koala's feet, a special P35 privy mark combines the Perth Mint's P mint mark with the anniversary years.
Around the rim, the name of the series: THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA, followed by the precious metal content: 1 OZ 9995 PLATINUM (one troy ounce of 99.95% platinum).
Around below, the date of issue 2023. In small letters next to it, the initials of the designer, MT (for Michael Tracey). |

For additional peace of mind, the coin incorporates an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. Detectable under a magnifying glass, it is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.
Even though it was issued during the reign of King Charles III, the coin's obverse portrays the official "Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse", featuring her Jody Clark effigy (in its uncouped version used in Australia) supplemented with the dates of Her Majesty’s reign - "1952 - 2022". |
