Coin | Platinum Ounce 2023 Year of the Rabbit |

The Australian one ounce platinum piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Pt for "Platinum") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This one-ounce platinum coin with a face value of $100 was issued as part of the Perth Mint's Lunar Series III to mark the Chinese Year of the Rabbit (22 January 2023 - 9 February 2024).
The Mint says about it: The strengths of the 12 animals of the lunar calendar are said to be evident in those born during their rule. Fourth in line after the mouse, ox and tiger, the rabbit is said to bestow intelligence, creativity, vigilance and compassion on those born under its influence in 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1oz 9995 Pt 100 DOLLARS.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "1 oz 9995 Pt" means "one troy ounce of 99.95% platinum". |

Reverse | |
The reverse of the coin portrays a leaping rabbit among grasses with feathery plumes.
Above left, the Chinese character for "rabbit": 兔, below which RABBIT and 2023.
The P mint mark of the Perth Mint is in the right field. The designer's initials IJ (for Ing Ing Jong) are at the tip of a grass ear on the left.
The face value and the precious metal content are on the obverse. |

For additional peace of mind, this 1oz coin incorporates an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. Detectable under a magnifying glass, it is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.
The series had been announced earlier, but its release was delayed due to a period of mourning after the death of Queen Elizabeth II; her effigy is on the coins even though they were issued when King Charles III was already on the throne. |
