Coin | Platinum Tenth-Ounce 2023 Australian Koala |
---|
|
The Australian tenth-ounce platinum piece (abbreviated as 1/10 oz and designated with Pt for "Platinum") is a bullion coin format.
The Platinum Koala series was introduced by the Perth Mint in 1988 following the large success of Australia’s gold coins in the previous year, and the approval on 18 June 1987 by the Australian government of the minting of platinum and silver coins. It is the world's first platinum bullion coin (the American Platinum Eagle series started nine years later, in 1997). Regular production of the series was discontinued after 2000 due to low demand. After that time, there are only some commemorative issues in the other formats; the bullion tenth-ounce was revived in 2023.
The overall weight of the coins is slightly over one tenth of an ounce, so as (accounting for the purity of the alloy) to have exactly 0.100 ounce of platinum content.
This coin is part of the long running Australian Koala series of bullion coins by the Perth Mint, which has a new reverse design every year. |

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II 1952 - 2022 · AUSTRALIA · 15 DOLLARS ·.
The legend is interrupted by the "memorial" inclusion of the dates of the Queen's reign, 1952 - 2022. |
