The Australian tenth-ounce platinum piece (abbreviated as 1/10 oz and designated with Pt for "Platinum") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This coin is part of the long running Australian Kookaburra series of bullion coins by the Perth Mint, which has a new reverse design every year. In 2022 the design features a kookaburra sitting on an ornamented birdbath.
The kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher family and the national bird of Australia.
The Mint says about this coin:
Now in its fourth decade and as popular as ever with investors, the Australian Kookaburra features annual designs of one of our most recognisable birds. Famed for its raucous laughing call, the beady-eyed kookaburra is heard across the nation - from the outback to the back yard. The 2022 Australian Kookaburra design is a reminder of the chortling creature’s flourishing presence in suburban neighbourhoods. The design portrays the regular visitor perched on an ornamental bird bath among agapanthus, flowering plants regularly seen in Australian gardens.
