The Australian one ounce silver piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.

As the continued existence of the largest reef structure created by living creatures is severely threatened by various factors - including tourism, water pollution and climatic changes - the Australian government has initiated measures to protect the Great Barrier Reef - also to prevent it from being classified by UNESCO as an "endangered world heritage site". Environmentalists agree, however, that the aid packages are coming too late and that the condition of the reef system will deteriorate dramatically in the coming decades.
