Silver Kilo 2022 Remembering Queen Elizabeth II, Coin from Cameroon - detailed information

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Given that Cameroon has been a republic since it gained independence in 1960, it is unclear why the Queen's effigy is displayed on the coin.

Below it, a small Coat of Arms of the Republic of Cameroon. It features a shield divided in three parts by two diagonal lines; in the central section, an upright sword and scales are superimposed on the outline of the map of the country, above which there is a five-pointed star. Behind the shield, two crossed bundles of rods with axes in the middle. Around above, the motto PAIX TRAVAIL PATRIE in French; in small letters below these, the same in English: PEACE WORK FATHERLAND.

Around the rim, above: ELIZABETH II 5.000 FRANCS CFA (five thousand Central African CFA Francs). The date of issue 2022 is divided by the portrait.

Around below, divided by the Coat of Arms, the name of the country in English: · REPUBLIC OF CAMEROON ·.

The background is decorated with a geometric pattern of thin lines.

The reverse design is coloured and shows at its centre the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom (which is in fact the personal Coat of the monarch).

The standard variant (used outside of Scotland) has the shield quartered, depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Ireland. The crest is crowned with St Edward's Crown (the lion standing on it on the full version is not present on this coin).

In the greenery below, a thistle, Tudor rose and shamrock are depicted, representing Scotland, England and Ireland respectively. This armorial achievement comprises the motto, in French, of English monarchs, DIEU ET MON DROIT (God and my Right), which has descended to the present royal family, as well as the Garter circlet which surrounds the shield, inscribed with the Order's motto, in French, HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE (Shame on him who thinks evil), partly obscured by the shield.

The dexter (on the left) supporter is a crowned English lion; the sinister (on the right), a Scottish unicorn. According to legend a free unicorn was considered a very dangerous beast; therefore the heraldic unicorn is chained, as were both supporting unicorns in the royal coat of arms of Scotland, with a crown around its neck.

In a wide area around the rim, the background of which s decorated with a geometric pattern of thin lines, there are twelve gold plated ovals with portraits separated by small crowns. On the top, the first definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (from 1953), facing her fifth portrait (from 2015) which is rotated to the left.
