Coin | Silver Ounce 2011 Battle of Midway |

|
The Cook Islands, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar circulates in parallel with the local Cook Islands Dollar; at the same time, the government also authorises many legal tender coins in the Cook Islands Dollar currency for collector's purposes. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, including one ounce of silver - such as this coin.
This coin is part of a Perth Mint series of coloured silver ounces commemorating Famous Naval Battles and features the Battle of Midway in 1942.
The Mint says about it: The Battle of Midway (1942) was fought near the Pacific island of Midway, and is considered a turning point in the Second World War. After Pearl Harbour, the Japanese planned to capture Midway to use as an advance base and to entrap and destroy the US Pacific Fleet. Because of intelligence, the US Pacific Fleet surprised the Japanese forces, sinking the four Japanese carriers, while losing the USS Yorktown alone. After Midway, the Americans and their allies took the offensive in the Pacific. |
