The mint mark of the mint which struck the coin is a small letter between the value 50 and the word PFENNIG.

After the reunification of Germany on 29 September 1990, the city of Berlin became part of the Federal Republic of Germany and also became its capital; before that, the city (excluding West Berlin) was the capital of the German Democratic Republic, known as East Germany. This is the first year when the Berlin Mint struck Deutsche Mark coins in the 50 pfennig denomination (it was issuing Eastern Marks before).

The exceptionally high mintage in this year is due to the fact that all circulation coinage in the new territories (what used to be the German Democratic Republic before) was changed to German Marks.
