One Dollar 1979, Coin from New Zealand - detailed information

One Dollar 1979, Coin from New Zealand
CoinOne Dollar 1979

When decimal currency was introduced in New Zealand on 10 July 1967, there was no new circulating denomination with the size and specifications of the old one crown piece, in which only commemorative coins had been issued; the new (large) fifty cents were equivalent in value but not in size. New Zealand issued crown-sized commemoratives with the specifications of the old crown, based on the British pre-decimal Crown. Until the introduction of the smaller circulating dollar coin in 1990, these coins had a one dollar denomination.

In some years, there were commemorative designs on the reverse; in other years, the large dollar coins (usually released as part of the annual mint sets) had the Coat of Arms of New Zealand on the reverse. The design is by William Gardner, who also designed the UK "English" shilling (1953 - 1970), the UK "Scottish" shilling (1953 - 1970), and the first decimal 20 pence piece (1982 - 2008).

The 1979 large dollar coin is remarkable in that the obverse features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by a New Zealand artist, James Berry. It is the only dollar of the "Coat of Arms" type to have this obverse.

The obverse of the coin shows the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right wearing the Russian Fringe Tiara, which was originally given by the "Ladies in Society" to Queen Alexandra on her Silver Wedding anniversary in 1888; in tiny raised letters on the neck truncation, the artists initials JB (for [Reginald George] James Berry).

Around, the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II QUEEN OF NEW ZEALAND 1979.

Within a border of small waves, the reverse of the coin depicts the Ensigns armorial of the Dominion of New Zealand on their shield, as granted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1956.

The shield is quartered: the first quadrant depicts the four stars on the national flag, representing the constellation of the Southern Cross; the second quadrant depicts a golden fleece, representing the nation's farming industry; the third depicts a sheaf of wheat for agriculture; and the fourth quadrant depicts crossed hammers for mining. The "pale" (a vertical strip in the middle) depicts three ships, representing the importance of sea trade, and the immigrant nature of all New Zealanders.

The shield is surmounted by the Royal Crown (St. Edward's Crown), from which fern fronds drop to surround the shield.

Below the shield, the value and denomination ONE DOLLAR.
