Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes. A number of mints issue a large variety of coins under the authority of Niue. Most of these are commemorative and collector issues dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, including one ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum). Those issued at prices much higher than their bullion value are separately listed in the Non-Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT) gold ounce section of the site. Unlike them, this coin is targeted at bullion investors and was initially released at a price close to the value of its precious metal content. This Donald Duck 85th Anniversary coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series of "premium bullion coins" featuring Disney characters. The Mint says about it: The world's most famous drake celebrates its 85th birthday and still enjoys worldwide popularity. In honour of the anniversary of Donald Duck the New Zealand Mint struck this coin from 1 ounce of 99.99% gold. On June 9, 1934, the first cartoon with the clumsy duck was broadcast in the US. In "The Wise Little Hen", Donald Duck had only a minor role, but then he achieved a rapid career development and has got fans all over the world, today. After Mickey Mouse celebrated his 90th birthday last year, now the drake with the blue sailor jacket makes it to his friend with round ears. Not so bad for an often moody poultry without trousers, which has become a world star since its Hollywood debut in 1934. Mickey Mouse™, which premiered in 1928 in the short film "Steamboat Willie", was already a huge blockbuster in the 1930s. Its inventor, Walt Disney, wanted to create a new character in addition to the decorous mouse: Donald looked cute, but could be hot-tempered and stinky. | ||||||
