Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to characters from Disney movies, and also celebrates the Lunar "Year of the Mouse" from the Chinese calendar (25 January 2020 - 11 February 2021).
The Mint says about it: "This Disney Year of the Mouse 1oz Silver Coin representing Longevity features a coloured and engraved image of a smiling Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse as they hold traditional red money envelopes to give as gifts. This image is taken from the Longevity scroll in Disney’s Happy Year of the Mouse artwork collection. The coin’s huge nominal diameter of 50 mm allows the design to be fully realised.
The coin is legal tender in Niue with the obverse featuring the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A Certificate of Authenticity is provided with the coin which confirms the 99.9% silver purity and the low 3,000-coin mintage.
It is packaged in a symbolic red box decorated with the entire Longevity scroll. On the scroll Mickey and Minnie are seen engaged in common activities for ushering in the Lunar New Year including cooking dumplings, greeting friends and giving gifts."
