Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to characters from Disney movies, and also celebrates the Lunar "Year of the Mouse" from the Chinese calendar (25 January 2020 - 11 February 2021).
The Mint says about it: "This Disney Year of the Mouse 1oz Silver Coin representing Good Fortune features a coloured and engraved image of a smiling Mickey Mouse handing his sweetheart Minnie Mouse a fortune cookie against a background of Chinese iconography. This image is taken from the Good Fortune scroll in Disney’s Happy Year of the Mouse artwork collection. This a unique large format 1oz coin sporting a huge nominal diameter of 50mm.
The coin is packaged in a fabulous decorative red box showing the entire Good Fortune scroll. On the scroll Mickey and Minnie are seen engaged in common activities for ushering in the Lunar New Y ear, including cooking, cleaning and sharing gifts. A Certificate of Authenticity confirms the silver purity and the coin’s unique number in the limited-edition mintage.
The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the coin is legal tender in Niue.
This Good Fortune coin is the first in the Disney Year of the Mouse Collection which also includes Prosperity, Longevity and Happiness."
