Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself.
This 5g silver coin note is part of a New Zealand Mint series of small silver foils, and is the third in the Batman Villains mini-series; it features Harley Quinn.
The character, whose name is a play on the word harlequin, had her first appearance was on 11 September 1992 in "Batman - The Animated Series". In 1999 she was inducted into the DC universe through her own series "Batman - Harley Quinn". |

The obverse of the coin shows at its centre the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Above the effigy is the monarch's legend, on two lines separated by a horizontal line: ELIZABETH II NIUE. Below the effigy, also on two lines separated by a horizontal line, the face value and date of issue: 2019 1 DOLLAR.
On a coloured ribbon above left, the metal content: 5gm .999 Fine Silver (five grams of 99.9% silver).
The background is patterned with the logo of the New Zealand Mint: NEW ZEALAND MINT on two lines, above which the stars of the Southern Cross constellation. |
