Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature movie characters. Some are also in innovative shapes, such as "Chibi".

Chibi (ちび or チビ) is a Japanese slang word describing something short (a thing, an animal or a person). The term is widely used to describe a specific style of caricature where characters are drawn in an exaggerated way: small and chubby, with stubby limbs and oversized heads. Coins of this type look like cartoon characters and have their corresponding shape; they are also very thick for their size.

This coin features Mickey Mouse and is the first Chibi coin in a series featuring Disney characters.

The Mint says about it:
"Mickey was Walt Disney’s primary cartoon character, who made his debut in Steamboat Willie on November 18, 1928, at the Colony Theater in New York. In all, there were over 120 Mickey Mouse cartoons made. He starred in the Mickey Mouse Club television show in the 1950s, appeared on thousands of merchandise items, and acted as chief greeter at the Disney theme parks. Walt Disney provided Mickey Mouse’s voice up to 1946.

However, for this coin he is back in his shorts!

The 1oz of pure silver used in this coin has been shaped and coloured in the Chibi art style to represent Disney’s Mickey Mouse. The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is found on the opposite side as confirmation that this is still a legal tender coin.

The outer box is themed with Mickey Mouse and the gang and includes a large window to allow you to easily display this super-cool collectible. Inside the coin is placed inside a specially designed case, moulded to the coin’s shape, for additional protection. To confirm it as a limited-edition coin, a Certificate of Authenticity is printed on the box along with the coin’s unique serial number."
