Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to characters from famous movies, and features Oogie Boogie from Disney's The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The Mint says about it: "This coin celebrates Oogie Boogie from Disney’s classic movie Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Made from 1oz pure silver, the coin has an antique finish and is beautifully engraved and coloured.
It shows the sinister antagonist and renowned gambler Oogie Boogie brandishing his dice. His henchmen Lock, Shock and Barrel are depicted underneath. Background engraving completes the design with bats and cobwebs!
The obverse includes an engraved swirling design behind the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and confirms it as a legal tender coin. This rectangular coin arrives in bespoke book-style packaging designed to complement the theme. A window has been added so you can easily display this spooky collectible without having to remove it from the packaging." |
