Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This shaped coin is part of a long-running series by the New Zealand Mint featuring characters and themes from Harry Potter, and depicts the Gryffindor Crest.
The Mint says about it: This 1oz pure silver coin of the Gryffindor Crest forms part of the Hogwarts House Crest Collection. The crest bears the Gryffindor lion on the shield in the centre, which features the house colours of red and gold. A scroll at the bottom is engraved with the name "Gryffindor" in red. The beautifully engraved surround has a mirrored and frosted finish for contrast.
The Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II can be found on the obverse of the coin to confirm it as a legal tender, even with its unique shape and colouring. The coin has a protective acrylic case to allow for handling of this precious house token.
It arrives inside a sleek and stylish, Harry Potter-themed rectangular case, which incorporates a window for easy display. A Certificate of Authenticity can be found on the back along with the coin’s unique number in the mintage. |
