Five Rand 2014 Twenty Years of Freedom, Coin from South Africa
CoinFive Rand 2014 Twenty Years of Freedom

The Rand currency was introduced in the then Union of South Africa on 14 February 1961, shortly before the establishment of the Republic on 31 May 1961. The largest circulating coin at the time was fifty cents; gradually, new coins were introduced to replace banknotes, with the highest circulating denomination now being Five Rand (abbreviated as R5). The Five Rand coin is bimetallic, with a brass centre and a copper-nickel outer ring. The edge has a "security groove" and lettering repeated ten times around the coin: SARB R5 (SARB for the South African Reserve Bank, which is the issuer of the coin, and R5 as abbreviation of the value).

From time to time, the South African Mint issues commemorative designs in the denomination, to mark special occasions.

This circulating commemorative R5 coin celebrates the twentieth anniversary of democracy and the end of apartheid in South Africa.

The apartheid system of institutionalised racial segregation in South Africa was ended through a series of negotiations between 1990 and 1993 and through unilateral steps by the de Klerk government. These negotiations took place between the governing National Party, the African National Congress, and a wide variety of other political organisations. The negotiations resulted in South Africa's first non-racial election, which was won by the African National Congress.

The reverse design of the coin repeats that of the R2 commemorative coin issued in 2004 to mark Ten years of Freedom.

Obverse
South Africa / Five Rand 2014 Twenty Years of Freedom - obverse photo

The obverse of the coin shows at its centre the Coat of Arms of South Africa, as adopted on Freedom Day 27 April 2000.

The Coat of Arms is a series of elements organised in distinct symmetric egg-like or oval shapes placed on top of one another. The completed structure combines the lower and higher oval shape in a symbol of infinity. The path that connects the lower edge of the scroll, through the lines of the tusks, with the horizon above and the sun rising at the top, forms the shape of the cosmic egg from which the secretary bird rises. In the symbolic sense, this is the implied rebirth of the spirit of the great and heroic nation of South Africa.

The motto in the semicircle around below, ǃKE E꞉ ǀXARRA ǁKE, is written in the Khoisan language of the ǀXam people and translates literally to "diverse people unite".

Below the Coat of Arms, the initials of the engraver: ALS (for Arthur Sutherland).

Around above, the date of issue: · 2014 ·. Around left and around right, the name of the country in two of the eleven official languages of South Africa.

The inscriptions this year are in Venda: Afurika Tshipembe, and in Ndebele: iSewula Afrika.

In tiny letters below the flag, the initials of the reverse engraver MJS (for for Marthinus J Scheepers).

To the left, the value and denomination 5 RAND.

Repeated multiple times around the outer rim in microtext, the abbreviation SARB, for South African Reserve Bank.
