Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.
The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating bullion coins under its jurisdiction, such as this 1 oz (one ounce) gold coin.
This is the seventh design in the Chronos series of bullion coins which started in 2015, and features changing designs every year, all with the same message referring to the well known phrase "Panta Rhei" by the famous Greek philosopher Heraclitus. "Chronos" (time) is a reference to the lasting value that precious metals have held during human history.
This is the first year in which the series was also issued in gold.
The Mint says about it: "Panta Rhei" - everything flows and things come and go. When it comes to value, precious metals have always held a crucial position in the world of finance. Nowadays, a safe haven at the very least, a financial norm in the past. Gold currently holds an especially important position in the financial world and we believe it will continue to do so for a long time. Now and forever. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: 100 DOLLARS 2021 ELIZABETH II - TOKELAU.
The date is divided by the portrait - in reference to historical Pressburger mint (after which the modern Pressburg Mint is named) coins issued in the 16th century which had the same feature.
Below the portrait, a geometric motif intended as a symbol of infinity, to both sides of which stylised clockwork mechanisms.
The rim is decorated with a laurel wreath. The background of the central circle is patterned with a texture of complex geometric motifs consisting of thin lines - a feature common for bullion coins made by the Pressburg Mint. |

Reverse | |
The reverse depicts the face of a clock, with the hands showing five minutes to twelve. Instead of XII at the top, the position is marked with Au (abbreviated from Aurum - the Latin word for gold) - the international symbol for gold in coinage and jewellery.
Around above, the name of the series: CHRONOS; around below, the metal content: 1 oz FINE GOLD 9999 (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold).
In the background, historical watch ornaments - two illustration of mermaids with ship's anchors; between them, a latent image showing vortex textures and an infinity symbol. |
