Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.
The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating bullion coins under its jurisdiction, such as this 1 oz (one ounce) gold coin.
This is the fourth design in the Terra (Earth) series by the Pressburg Mint, which features a new design every year.
The mint says about it:
Earth - in Latin, Terra - is our only home. It provides every resource needed for life, but our lifestyle has left a mark on it. This coin addresses importance of protection of environment and improvement of our relationship to the planet Earth. The obverse design shows a map of Asia, Australia and Oceania; the continents are textured with an ethnic ethnic motif. On the right, the fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley; his initials IRB are in tiny letters below the neck truncation.
Around above, the face value 100 DOLLARS. Around right, the legend of the monarch: ELIZABETH II - TOKELAU. Around below, the name of the series and the date of issue, TERRA 2022.
The rim is decorated with stylised compass numbering. |
