Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.
The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating bullion coins under its jurisdiction, such as this 1 oz (one ounce) gold coin.
This is the eighth design in the Chronos series of bullion coins which started in 2015, and features changing designs every year, all with the same message referring to the well known phrase "Panta Rhei" by the famous Greek philosopher Heraclitus. "Chronos" (time) is a reference to the lasting value that precious metals have held during human history.
The Mint says about it:
"Panta Rhei" - everything flows and things come and go. When it comes to value, precious metals have always held a crucial position in the world of finance. Nowadays, a safe haven at the very least, a financial norm in the past. Silver currently holds an especially important position in the financial world and we believe it will continue to do so for a long time. Now and forever. |

At its centre, the obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits. In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around above, on two lines the monarch's legend and the date of issue: ELIZABETH II TOKELAU 2022. Around below, the metal content: 1 oz FINE GOLD 9999 (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold).
Around the portrait, clockwork mechanisms. The background is patterned with a texture of complex geometric motifs consisting of thin lines - a feature common for bullion coins made by the Pressburg Mint.
The rim is decorated like the rim of a clock face. |

The reverse depicts the face of a clock, with the hands showing five minutes to twelve. Instead of XII at the top, the position is marked with Ag (abbreviated from Argentum) - the international symbol for silver in coinage and jewellery.
The name of the series, Chronos, is in small letters at 3 o'clock, where the name of the clock make would normally be located.
