Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.

The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating bullion coins under its jurisdiction, such as this 1 oz (one ounce) gold coin.

This is the third design in the Terra (Earth) series by the Pressburg Mint; this is also the first year when the series was issued in gold.

The mint says about it:
Earth - in Latin, Terra - is our only home. It provides every resource needed for life, but our lifestyle has left a mark on it. This coin addresses importance of protection of environment and improvement of our relationship to the planet Earth. Fulfilling our needs is as equally important as keeping Earth a viable place for future generations.
